Huguette Clark has left the people of Santa Barbara her 23 acre estate.
Congratulations. In addition Ms. Clark's art collection will be housed here for viewing at any time. This is huge, wonderful news for those who had hoped to be able to enjoy this wonderful property. If you have followed this story on this blog, you know that is what I had hoped for and now our wish has been granted. The estate has been given to all of us.

Huguette Clark died in New York last month at the age of 104. Her will, obtained Wednesday by the Associated Press, reveals that artworks by Renoir, John Singer Sargent and other greats will be moved from her New York home to the Santa Barbara property.

Her will revealed that Clark left most of her $400 million fortune to the arts. The museum will be run by the new Bellosguardo Foundation, named after the Santa Barbara property. Bellosguardo means "beautiful view" in Italian.

Clark had not set foot on the estate for more than 50 years before her death.

It is unknown when a museum might open at Bellosguardo. In Santa Barbara, the Mayor, Helene Schneider called the idea "a crowning jewel in our city's artistic heritage" and said she would offer the city's aid "in making Huguette Clark's wishes become a reality."

Wonderful news. Thank you Huguette Clark. May you rest in peace knowing that your home will be enjoyed by those who visit it.

(***Some historical photos from circa 1920 of the exterior of the Bellosguardo estate in Santa Barbara from the USC Library can be seen below. ***)

Photograph of an exterior view of the Bellosguardo estate in Santa Barbara, ca.1920. A two-story building -- the Child Estate whose land later became a bird refuge and zoo -- can be seen on a hill partially obscured by trees to the left of center. The hill is bordered at right by a body of water, while a field and mountains can be seen in the right background. Plants and trees are visible in the foreground.
Originally, the image had the following title: "Exterior view of the Bellosguardo estate in Santa Barbara, later a bird refuge and zoo". The Bellosguardo estate, however, was never turned into a bird refuge or a zoo. It was sold to William A. Clark in 1923 for $300,000 and, 10 years later, Mrs. Clark had the house torn down to make way for a new home designed by Reginald Johnson, architect of Santa Barbara’s main post office and the Biltmore Hotel.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 259px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3W50YF0fCJw/TgNN4FAyn3I/AAAAAAAABC0/vH5QYUcNmko/s400/Bello3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5621422385702018930" />

Another of the exterior below shows tables and chairs on a stone outdoor patio at center. The property is passed by many tourists unknowingly on a daily basis because it sits perched high on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The Estate is owned by Huguette Clark who is 103 and lives in a hospital in New York. The Huguette Clark Mansion is 21,666 square feet on 23 acres and is worth more than 100 Million. Huguette inherited her money from her father William Andrews Clark who some said was worth more than Rockefeller. He made the bulk of his fortune in Copper in Jerome Arizona: the United Verde Copper Mine and in Butte Montana. Las Vegas today resides in Clark County named after him.

Clark's desire was to become a Senator of Montana. He ultimately became Senator under much suspicion and only remained for one term.

Huguette, wed William Gower on August 18, 1928 at the age of 22 at Bellosguardo. As a way of preparing for her big day she donated $50,000 at the time to the city of Santa Barbara to clean up the Bird Refuge across the street. Ironically, She divorced within 3 years. She herself filed for divorce and received no alimony.

Rumor has it that Huguette has not visited the mansion in some 30+ years. This was certainly the rumor I heard back in the late 80's. She ended up living the rest of her years in New York with her mother until her mother died leaving her depressed and reclusive. She preferred to remain alone with her dolls.

Rather than live in one of her many mansions, today she lives her final years in a hospital. I wish her much peace and happiness.

http://realestalker.blogspot.com/2010/08/lets-talk-about-huguette-clark.html

Maybe down the road Ty Warner will buy Bellosguardo and make it into a museum or park that we can all enjoy.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 264px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v4UUn8btd9w/TdwzvWAE_BI/AAAAAAAABBw/ZJrJxQxEsbM/s400/1b.grid-9x2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610416124249570322" />

Beautiful Day for a Mint Julep

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SEOesUUDoxE/TcWG17zKKsI/AAAAAAAABBU/_QnxWDg70tM/s400/Derby.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604033572475906754" />

While it may be 58 degrees and cloudy today in Santa Barbara at least its not raining like it is in Louisville. Not enough to change the Derby. So jump in your car over to Earl Warren showgrounds like I recommend every year. You can place your bets.
This years winner is going to be Midnight Interlude who won the Santa Anita Derby this year. It will be a battle down the stretch to hold off deep closing Dialed In who will be making a desperate drive to catch him to no avail. But he will pass Archarcharch and beat him out of 2nd by a nose. Finishing up but still close by will be Shackleford. So now that you know the finish put your money down and have yourself a nice mint julep. Or better yet, tape the race and have a Bloody Mary over at Brophy Brothers. Just give yourself enough time to pick up your huge winnings before going home.
Order of finish for this years Kentucky Derby:
15,
8,
1,
14

Good luck
Savvy.

Phuket, Thailand

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/TOa5GkWg5lI/AAAAAAAABAs/_QzCa1ssu7s/s400/ChangPhuket.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5541319914014434898" />

When not visiting Santa Barbara i'm known to hang out in Thailand with Bono on Pansea beach....
My new blog if interested is http://surinhotelphuket.blogspot.com

Real Men Cook 2010....Flag is Up Farm

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 140px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/TIp_r2ot2RI/AAAAAAAAA8w/AyHUqln2St0/s400/leadership-corporate-courses.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5515361085045987602" />

You've heard of the "Horse Whisperer" haven't ya? The best Martini: Harry's Plaza Cafe, the best pasta: Trattoria Mollie, the best Oyster shooter: Brophy Brothers, the best spot to have a beer at 5pm: Patio at the Harbor Restaurant on the Pier. So when I find little known spots that are apt to bring great joy, I can't help but pass the information on to you.

Hidden on a tiny street in Montecito, 557 Hot Springs Road you will find the Easton Gallery is open Weekends 1-5pm and by appointment. Elizabeth travels to Italy, India, and Indonesia to experience food, spirituality, and healing. (My interpretation, don't bust me on this one.) She is quite a compelling author and hold's my attention. Which is saying quite a bit since I get bored with many books. I admire her for doing what she did and must say she is braver than most and has especially strong knees to be cleaning floors for hours on end in 100 degree heat in an Ashram in India. While I posit to my wife that I too could do this, most likely I would cry uncle before the 15 minute mark and pour myself a Guinness as a consolation prize. But I digress.

Elizabeth had guts and the time to escape for a year. She spent time in meditation and grew spiritually. But what if you only had a day, a few days, or a week? Wouldn't it be nice if there was a place to get in touch with your spirituality that was close to home and in a beautiful location that didn't cost a fortune. Well, I can tell you there is such a place and it is in Montecito California: Immaculate Heart Center for Spiritual Renewal. You too can escape and practice your meditation and you don't even have to fly to Bali or Mumbai.

The center offers private non directed retreats for individuals and couples of all faiths. This perspective of mine is called upon quite often by those who have never been to Santa Barbara and ask me: "What is so great about Santa Barbara and why the heck (not really their word) do you do this blog?"

To answer this can be difficult since 100 small things make up the answer. But in short here is my list:

1. Perfect Weather without Question. Everywhere in the world people are obsessed with weather. Not here. Why? Because it is perfect and perfect every day. In fact some kids reached their 4th Birthday without having experienced rain because it went that long. (Go Google it for crying out loud if you don't believe me. This isn't some tall tale.)

2. Ocean, Small incredible strip of land, Mountains. Nowhere else in California, Oregon, Washington or on the East Coast has such an amazing landscape. Go have a cocktail on top of the Canary and spin 360 degrees and tell me you aren't amazed at this landscape. Wow.

3. People. This is not LA. This is not Orange County. This is not New York. Leave your attitude at home and relax. People are nice, courteous, appreciative of their lives and generally all around good. If there are doubts, go have a drink at Harry's or Joe's and you will experience the nicest bartenders around.

4. Architecture. This we can thank to the 1925 Earthquake that destroyed downtown allowing businessmen to rebuild to stricter codes. Now even the downtown grocery store resembles Spanish Architecture. It is a truly amazing site to see. Walk through Paseo Nuevo finished in 1990 to get an idea of what I mean.

5. Beaches. Amazing, crowd free beaches are for the taking. All of them are perfect in their own way. Go check them out and let me know what you think.

6. Love for Life. The folks here really do love their lives. And why not, they live in one of, if not THE, most amazing place on the planet. But if you live here or visit you will experience this fact by the amazing festivals that celebrate the seasons throughout the year: Solstice in Summer, French festival, Greek Festival, Irish Festival, Music Festival, Fiesta in August, etc. etc. These folks know how to have a good time.

These are my top 6 reasons. Now why do I do this blog? Why that is easy; because I am the most interesting man in Santa Barbara who else can I trust to give you the skinny.

Godfather of Santa Barbara and why you should love him....

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 280px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/TG6YTwIiaXI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/dHl1tVHXDAI/s400/TyWarner.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5507506859426343282" />

Ty Warner. Hum, sounds familiar but how do I know that name. Well if you live in or visit Santa Barbara my guess is you have heard this name and you have a true appreciation for this man. I think I can go out on a limb and even say the old fogies who don't read this blog love him deep down. But who is he again? Ty Warner is the Beanie Baby King. Well, at least that is how I refer to him. He is the greatest marketer of our time and most people have never even heard of him. And if he had his way he would keep it that way. Ty Warner is famously protective of his privacy. Hat's off to him for that. Who wants to be bothered all the time as a famous person. Besides he already tried to become an actor and that didn't work out so Businessman has its perks of anonymity.

Some of the reasons why you should love, really LOVE, Ty Warner...he is responsible for improving or building the following in Santa Barbara:

1. Four Seasons Biltmore
2. San Ysidro Ranch
3. Montecito Country Club
4. Sandpiper Golf Course
5. Glen Annie Golf Course - technically Goleta (Survives today solely because of Ty Warner)
6. Rancho San Marcos (Santa Ynez)
7. Ty Warner Sea Center

He singlehandedly (Not confirmed since I don't have the time. This is a blog for crying out loud and I have a real job, so get over it.) employs more people in the city than any other individual. For this alone he should be revered.

He is known for his demand for quality and perfection. If I were him and had my name on something, I too would demand such things.

Ty Warner decided to become an Entrepreneur in 1986 after 20 years working for Dakin, now merged with Applause, and strike out on his own. In 1993, Ty came out with the Beanie Babies concept of plush toys and the rest they say is history.

http://world.ty.com/

But, what would a story such as this be if the secret behind the success not be revealed. How did he do it? How did Ty Warner create the most profitable toy company in the entire country and nobody even realize it, acknowledge it, or believe it. Until of course, Ty got a little peeved with the press and showed them his accounting records to set the record straight once and for all. How in the world did he do it?

Well, from what I can tell he had a secret weapon: He had a pipeline whereby he could sell his toys. This pipeline and the ability to supply product through them, these small family owned knick nack shops, allowed him to create a business in the beginning with very little overhead or staff. Genius I say. Total Genius.

And now some 10 years later he branches out into real estate. But not just any real estate, only the creme de la creme.

Check out his property in Kona, Hawaii:

http://www.konavillage.com/

Wow. I spent time here as a child and boy would I love to go back and see what he has done. Wow.

So if you are wandering around Santa Barbara and you happen to run into Ty Warner, smile, nod and be grateful to all he has done. Or better yet go buy one of his plush toys, maybe one where all the money goes to charity. I am sure he would appreciate that. Don't stop him, say hi, or even ask for his autograph, for he is just a man who appreciates his privacy and is content just living the good life in Santa Barbara, so leave him alone.

However, if Ty Warner is reading this and wants to have the most interesting man in Santa Barbara come be his Apprentice all you have to do is say the word and I will be there. Until we meet, my extreme respect. I told of the amazing updates made by the new owner: Ty Warner (Beanie Baby King) to the restaurant and rooms. While the prices may be astronomical the amenities are amazing and guests are raving. If you cannot afford the rooms at least stop in to the Stonehouse Restaurant for Brunch or the Plow and Angel for a cocktail. Readers of this blog will know that many posts have been written about Wine Tasting and that Wine is close to my heart. The best advice I can give to anyone planning a trip is the following:
1. Go early 2. Designate a Driver, or better yet get a Limo 3. Go over Hwy 154 and stop at Cold Springs Tavern on the way home for dinner. 4. Take your time.
The most beautiful wineries are: 1. Sunstone, 2. Melville Vineyards 3. Sanford
Quaint stops that are memorable are: 1. Foxen, 2. Longoria (Great outdoor patio for lunch) 3. Mosby.

A fun way to do it is to plan your route with the wine map:
http://www.sbcountywines.com/visit/map.html

Or if you are very adventurous take a few days and use the Sideways map:
http://www.santabarbaraca.com/includes/media/docs/Sideways-Map.pdf

Be sure to enjoy the Pinot that Santa Barbara is known for and seek out Seasmoke which is one my absolute favorites.
https://www.seasmokecellars.com/index.asp

You can order a bottle like Miles and Jack (Sideways) at the Hitching Post II.
Tell them Senor Savvy sent you.

Maybe down the road Ty Warner will buy Bellosguardo and make it into a museum or park that we can all enjoy.

View Larger Map

Senor Savvy, "The Most Interesting Man in Santa Barbara!"

Vacation in France ... and don't even leave SB

This weekend the French Festival returns to Oak Park. Well, no triple crown this year and the winner of the Derby and the Preakness aren't even going to show up today. But I did tell you that Ice Box would be the favorite and my prediction has proven to be correct. Now you ask, what are the others in order of finish, well here are my predictions:

6 Ice Box
3 UptownCharlyBrown
5 Fly Down
2 Spangled Star

Box 'em and I hope you cash a check.
Cheers and good luck.
Senor Savvy, the most interesting man in Santa Barbara (It must be true, Google it!)

It's Complicated -- Great Santa Barbara Movie

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/S__Qj7lpfiI/AAAAAAAAA7w/OF2FD4UWP5c/s400/2373102-Santa_Barbara_View_From_County_Courthouse_Tower-Santa_Barbara.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5476324987615411746" />

I just saw my favorite actress in the movie: "It's complicated" last night. Meryl is an amazing actress and really shows her amazing beauty in this film. It is truly worth renting especially for a feel for the Santa Barbara area. While many of the sets and areas are not really in Santa Barbara the farmers market, jogging scene, and fly over the city are truly great shots of the city. Don't scrutinize too much since the editors spun many of the negatives and many things appear backwards in the opening shots. But a great film to see Santa Barbara and Meryl Streep..The greatest actor of our lifetimes.

http://travel.latimes.com/daily-deal-blog/index.php/its-complicated-so-n-6090/

http://www.traditionalhome.com/design_decorating/showhouses/set-design_ss1.html

Senor Savvy...Most Interesting Man in Santa Barbara

Belmont here we come

While yes this site is devoted to Santa Barbara, I like to think the many festivities, festivals etc throughout the year add to the excitement of the months. For instance the yearly Summer Solstice parade coming June 26th marks the beginning of summer.
http://www.solsticeparade.com/

But June 5th will be the final for the Triple Crown. And with no horse running for the triple: Super Savvy is out and Looking at Lucky the Preakness winner also out, it is a whole new race. Most people won't even care about it or watch.

Big Mistake.

My pick for the Derby will be back. Probably the rightful favorite. So look for Ice Box to win at low odds. But at least this makes the exacta, trifecta and Superfecta a little easier to figure now that I have told you the winner's name.

Senor Savvy
"The most interesting man in Santa Barbara"

Kentucky Derby

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 364px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/S9mqBmsBMKI/AAAAAAAAA7o/81etP6cWXsU/s400/churchill-downs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465586567332573346" />
The first Saturday in May is a National Holiday if you live in Louisville Kentucky. But if you are in Santa Barbara you must guide your GPS to the Earl Warren Fairgrounds to place your bets.
http://www.earlwarren.com/

I am not a huge fan of spending much time in this locale. The original betting parlor on the left as you walk in has more character than the main area yet it too is filled with cigarette smoking bettors dying for a drink and a 1 to 5 favorite to yell at to win. But nonetheless this is where you need to go to place your bets.

Now, you ask, who do I bet on in this year's Derby? Well, because I like you I will tell you what I think will happen on Saturday. First the race is going to be extremely "Heavily Pressured" as normally is the case. No real strong favorite so many, many horses will be going off at crazy high odds. So if you have a horse you like and it is at odds of say 10-1 or higher, please put $2 on him/her and hope for the best.

Some live longshots are: Ice Box, Line of David, Stately Victor, Devil may Care, Jackson Bend, Awesome Act, Dublin, and Super Saver.

If you would like some free past performances go here:

http://www.drf.com/tc/kentuckyderby/2010/136.html

I see the race being won by one of the 4 closers, in order of my preference:
Ice Box, Awesome Act, Dublin, and Stately Victor.

My prediction for final outcome is as follows:
1. Ice Box (2)
2. Mission Impazible (14)
3. Dublin (17)
4. Line of David (5)

I am confident that Ice Box will come in at least 2nd, the others are all guesses. But after much raving from friends and knowing that the wonderful Gaucho: Mitchell Sjerven of Bouchon fame took on the task of opening Seagrass Restaurant, I couldn't help but find myself at a table.

With the goal of providing the best Santa Barbara coastal cuisine, I would say they deliver. The menu is constantly changing with the seasons so please check their website for current must have's: http://www.seagrassrestaurant.com/dinner.htm
I was lucky enough to try the Pacific Oysters which were some of the freshest I have ever eaten. The Lobster and Pumpkin Bisque was divine, this coming from someone who doesn't like soup. For my main course I delved into Spiny Lobster that was almost as good as the one I caught off the coast of Laguna, as well as the oven roasted Calamari. This dish was so amazing it is worth the trip in and of itself.

The folks from Bouchon have done themselves proud with this Santa Barbara treat. Seagrass is a must visit restaurant. Tell them Senor Savvy sent you. Its splendid location, between palm-fringed Pacific beaches and the ever-green Santa Ynez Mountains, quaint Spanish-Mediterranean-style architecture, gourmet fare, and posh hotels have attracted West Coast residents for quiet weekends for decades. And no wonder: From wine-tasting in the country’s largest wine-producing region and supping on sublime organic foods, to enjoying massages for two and strolling barefoot on the beach at sunset, a visit here is an undeniably heady experience. Tack on an outing in a hot-air balloon – a favorite local activity – and you’ll be guaranteed to swoon over the scenery, as well as your companion!" Husband and wife team Alberto and Elaine Morello built this restaurant from the shell of a childrens store and what used to be the tiny space of Arigato Sushi. This of course long before Arigato became so popular to occupy the monstrous spot they do now on State Street.

Olio e Limone has a wonderful, though expensive, menu. The menu is expansive to include all the favorites. My party ordered the Imported prosciutto with toasted country bread for an appetizer and for my entree I had the Homemade duck ravioli with creamy porcini mushroom sauce. I was a bit disappointed that the taste of the duck was overwhelmed by the mushroom sauce. The taste was lost making the fact it was filled with duck completely irrelevant. My date had the special of the day: halibut and was quite thrilled at the preparation and presentation.

I was most impressed with the large wine list. We chose a bottle of D'Bruno Syrah which was in serious need of being decanted. Our waiter obliged my request and decanted the wine. This Syrah was in much need of breathing, but once it opened up was amazing. I highly recommend it.

If you are looking for a fun spot for a great Italian meal I recommend stopping into Olio e Limone.

Urban Wine Trail

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SXj6YPshWmI/AAAAAAAAAs4/ZvcHNHU56rk/s400/Jaffurs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5294256656411089506" />

The Santa Barbara Wine country is no longer just in Santa Ynez. Located a few doors down from the Arlington theatre, Downey's restaurant has been wowing the Santa Barbara food scene for years. John Downey is the master of using the best ingredients and making the flavor's pop. The menu is filled with great offerings. We were met at the door by Jo who showed us to our table, but it only took a few moments to be welcomed by Liz Downey. Liz and her team of two worked that dining room gracefully, professionally, and to perfection. While I never felt that there was any airs of haughtiness, I knew that this was a dining room to be respected.

My date and I chose the "Taste of Santa Barbara" menu, which is pre fixe offering of three courses: Shredded Crab cake on toast, followed by the salad: Tom Shepherd’s Greens with Choice of Two Dressings, followed by the entree: Grilled Duck with Cabernet Sauce, Roasted Artichokes, Pearl Onions & Potatoes.

The crab cake was extremely fresh and perfectly prepared, reminiscent of eating cracked crab on Pier 39 in Stearns Wharf. The presentation and perfection of tastes combined as it were an entree and not just an appetizer.

My date and I received the wrong dressing on our salads, which was quickly fixed for my date. I kept the vinaigrette and wished I had the blue cheese. Not being one to appreciate oil dressing I was no judge for this dressing. But the salad itself was amazing. The blue cheese dressing was divine. This was the only mistake the staff made all night and thus could easily forgive.

The duck breast was grilled to perfection. The wine sauce and side of dark leg meat was not overdone. Being a great fan of duck, I grill quite a bit. This duck was fresh and yet not gamey. While it was cooked medium rare it was not cold or too rare. The sauce and and side was a perfect accoutrement to a perfect meal.

Liz Downey recommended a gerwurtzaminer to accompany our crab and salad. This white wine was perfect for these courses. For our entree, I chose not to go with her suggestion of a half bottle of a wine (whose name I cannot recall,) but instead chose the Stolpman Hilltops Syrah.

http://www.stolpmanvineyards.com/

I was so pleased with this wine that I searched 5 local shops in search of a bottle. Needless to say I was unsuccessful. I sensed that this may not have been the wine that Liz would have chosen for us, but her wine list is amazing and this wine in particular is now one of my all time favorites.

Our dessert was an Apple treat that I can only describe as ambrosia. The tastes cannot be described with mere words. Now that may have been the Syrah speaking, but nonetheless, the dessert was fantastic.

Downey's restaurant always delivers. Years ago when I would recommend this dining room, people would thank me a hundred times over. This is a restaurant to enjoy again and again for all occasions. The kindness of the staff: Jo, Karen (Who turns 21 in 6 weeks) and the regal Liz will make you want to return.

While Zagat ranked this restaurant: 28 for food and 28 for service, I would have to say that there was no air of hautiness often found in a dining room of such caliber. I would have to encourage a visit to experience such a wonderful dining experience for yourself. I look forward to hearing your comments.

Years ago when I was asked what was the best restaurant in Santa Barbara, I would pause for effect then say: Downey's. Absolutely Downey's. Now new restaurants come and go, some good and some great, but Downey's remains a constant in the culinary world of Santa Barbara. I will continue my review of the wonderful meal I had after Christmas. Have a wonderful Holiday. Be safe and healthy.

January 13, 2009.
Happy New Year. I got inspired by my post and booked a trip to lovely Santa Barbara. I called Liz Downey and booked a reservation for this Sunday at 7pm. Liz is a consummate professional and lovely woman who took great care with my request on the phone. I look forward to our dinner. I will give a review early next week.

Politics in America

Please visit my new Blog to discuss Politics in America:

www.presidentsblackberry.com

Since President-Elect Obama must relinquish his Blackberry please help him by posting your thoughts and ideas for keeping him abreast of the issues most important to the American people.

Neverland Ranch Sold November 10th, 2008

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 361px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SSHbBuvcdcI/AAAAAAAAAKM/vqBP3idblvw/s400/neverlandGate.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5269733861773571522" />
While Michael Jackson is living in Dubai and creating drama by entering ladies bathrooms, his Neverland Ranch was quietly sold to his neighbor Thomas J. However, with a quick hop onto a Skywest flight to Salt Lake City (2 hour flight) you can be slopeside in no time at all. www.delta.com

This year Deer Valley was voted best ski resort by skiing magazine. This is an amazing resort with comforts unknown at most resorts. You can ship your skis to the resort and have them waiting for you at the base of the mountain. You can leave your skis overnight at the base for free, and for an added $5 you can get your skis waxed. Ski valets help unload your car and family as well. Deer Valley deserves their honor as best resort and you can get there easily from Santa Barbara.

If you decide to seek out the extreme, go on up to Snowbird: ranked #1 in north america by Outside magazine. The powder here and at next door Alta is famous worldwide. Extreme skiers and those looking for an adrenaline rush will enjoy the fresh stash of powder here. All three of these resorts are only 30 minutes from the airport once you land.

Two key secrets to bear in mind upon landing are 1. The Park City Quick Start program which allows you to ski free your first day, using your boarding pass as a ticket. (Must read the requirements here: http://www.resortquestparkcity.com/ParkCityQuickStart.htm
Understand that the rules must be followed and black out dates may apply.

2. To get discount tickets for ALL resorts, stop into the Canyon Sports shop in downtown Salt Lake: http://www.canyonsports.com/

They sell tickets super cheap: http://www.canyonsports.com/tickets.html

Let them know Senor Savvy sent you. Enjoy your ski season.

Horse Racing -- Betting in Santa Barbara

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SP9etFwadrI/AAAAAAAAAH0/v4UzzMbcPIg/s400/wager_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260027018524391090" />

With the Breeder's cup races this Friday/Saturday at Oaklawn at Santa Anita, many of you visiting Santa Barbara will be looking for the spot to place some bets. Santa Barbara's Earl Warren Fairgrounds built an air conditioned tent like room for this purpose. All races are viewable via Live simulcast -- Satellite wagering. When you arrive walk straight in past the old, original wagering building on the left. You will find many of the local bettor's who go every day towards the front, so if you plan on spending the day betting, it is best to arrive early. Don't let the fact that most people know one another there to worry you. You are amongst friends. Most likely drunk friends, but friends nonetheless. Good luck. Sandpiper is the Pebble Beach of Central California. This course is public and owned by Ty Warner (Beanie Baby King). Ty has methodically acquired the best courses in the surrounding area including: Glen Annie Golf Club, Montecito Country club and Rancho San Marcos to name a few. Twilight rates at Sandpiper are decent at $84 weekends and $69 weekday.

http://www.sandpipergolf.com/

While Sandpiper is the most well known, there are two wonderful hidden gems: 1. Hidden Oaks Golf Course (9 hole) http://hiddenoaksgolfsb.net/ and 2. Santa Barbara Golf Club owned by the city of Santa Barbara. SBGC is my favorite course and for the money it can't be beat. (Shown in pictures above.) I recommend this to any golfer looking for an amazing value and views.
http://www.santabarbara.com/Activities/golf/sbgolfclub/

Please visit another wonderful site with great information about the golf courses of Santa Barbara:
http://www.santabarbara.com/Activities/golf/

Santa Barbara County Wine Tasting Secrets

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SMqenuHlqeI/AAAAAAAAAGI/x-VOsPBN74s/s400/wine_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245179121258310114" />

When wine tasting in Santa Ynez valley, many of the local secrets are missed by the day tripper. One hidden gem is Nielsen's Market in Santa Ynez where you can get your picnic lunch at their deli and get a six pack of your favorite wines with a 10% discount. Mix and match after you have visited the wineries and tasting rooms. Ask Rodney Nielsen for help with selections. You won't be disappointed. Besides, you can revel in the fact that you are doing as the locals do.

http://nielsensmarket.com/wine_dept.htm

For dinner afterwards, stop in Trattoria Grappolo at 3687C Sagunto St. for dinner.
They have amazing food and the folks who dine here are those who know food. Try their house wine or look for D'Bruno Sangiovese to round out your dinner. This is a hot spot so call for reservations or sit at the bar: 805-688-6899. Reserve a table at:
http://www.opentable.com/single.aspx?pc=&ref=198&ur=&restref=&rid=20107

This is a locals favorite. Ronald Reagan's former spread and Michael Jackson's Neverland claim this valley home. So, if you are in the mood for a western style ranch to round out your wine tasting in the Santa Barbara county wine country, head on over to the Alisal Guest Ranch and resort.

At Alisal horsemen and women can take lessons to become eligible to join in the 10,000-acre working cattle ranch's weekly rodeo. Other available distractions are the on site shooting range, where Air Force sharpshooter Dale Combs will teach you how to shoot like a champ. The property includes 50 miles of trails and has 100 thoroughbred quarter horses to choose from. If this is not enough fun for you, choose from two 18-hole championship golf courses before finding your private cabin.

Located just outside Solvang since 1946 the 73 guest ranches can be reserved from $475 per night by contacting them at 805-688-6411 or visiting their site:

http://www.alisal.com/

Let them know Senor Savvy sent you. Upon returning home you realize how incredibly fortunate you were and amazing a place you just visited. I am often asked why I love Santa Barbara so much. Having lived there for 14+ years and then been forced to move away, only to return and visit I can honestly say there are almost too many reasons to mention. But this is one inherent reason: the natural beauty and its accessibility. Anyone, of any socio-economic background can access the offerings the city presents to the visitor. If you are on a Mcdonald's budget you can see the same amazing sites as the Billionaire with the house in Montecito.

Lotusland is such a place. You will be amazed. I will let the photos speak for themselves. In fact if you have good walking shoes, all six are actually within easy walking distance of one another within the downtown Santa Barbara area. If you get tired, lazy, or tipsy, you can take the free (25 cents) electric shuttle up to Margerum Wine Company (Intermezzo) at 813 Anacapa Street. But otherwise, you can walk from one to the other.

Many of these wineries will even deliver your purchases to your hotel so you don't have to carry them to the next winery on your list. Being a Scorpio, I revel getting into the ocean. While I prefer the Andaman sea, being a true California native (I have immunity from prosecution for rolling stops) I make the most of our wonderful ocean. While surfing upon the surface at Rincon may be enjoyable, nothing beats getting under the surface and seeing the life in the kelp forests. If you, like me, take the time to search out websites devoted to dive sites in SB you will find scant information to help you in your quest. If you are visiting you may be really confused, since there is really no info on where to go and what to see underwater. A favorite spot, that really requires a boat, is Isla Vista. I found this wonderful site that outlines the site:
http://www.saintbrendan.com/cdnjuly00/scoast7.html

I dove this wonderful site with the help of my friend Brian who took me out to the spot on his amazing boat. We had two relaxing dives in the kelp forest. My dive buddy Brenton and I were the only two in the water along that entire stretch in front of UCSB. Huge horseshoe crabs skimmed the sandy bottom as we searched for the reef. While we never did find any reef to speak of it was still a very special dive nonetheless. Worth the hike if you are set on a local beach dive.

While this site is possible to dive as a beach dive, I would rather recommend that you go out to Butterfly Beach in front of the Four Seasons Biltmore Hotel instead. Walk as far left as possible and swim about 1/4 mile out to find kelp and a shallow reef. I hope this helps those looking for an adventure during their time in Santa Barbara.

I have gone as far north as Refugio beach diving off the beach. Technical difficulties, caused me to abort the dive. I can say that the fact it is much further north means it is a much more exposed site: wind and chop. So be aware and dive within your abilities.

A perfect cocktail.....Blue Agave

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SKxQVgGyydI/AAAAAAAAAEM/pzJH7IXdXD0/s400/blueagave.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5236648797050948050" />

To find a place to sit, to ponder, to contemplate. I lived behind the Arlington in a studio along Chapala and would look forward to meeting friends at the warm and cozy spot. The cafe has always reminded me of a Parisian spot on Ile Saint-Louis. Now the restaurant is twice the size and a whole new name and buzz. The dining room still somehow retains its aura of a small intimate locals restaurant.

On this particular visit I was meeting family and the four of us could not get an early reservation. We decided to chance it and sat at the bar waiting for our 8pm seating. The bartender was a joy to watch and very personable. We ordered a bottle of wine and shared it with the staff. The host seemed to have forgotten about us and we ultimately didn't get seated until 30 minutes after our reservation.

Our server more than made up for this lapse. With a packed house, the service was still timely and attentive. I started with the wonderful Pan Seared Crab Cakes drizzled with a roasted red pepper aioli sauce. This was perfectly done. As so many restaurants cannot prepare crab cakes this was a pleasant surprise. For my main course I had the Roasted Duck with Chambord Black Compote. The duck itself was excellent if not a little over done. However, the choice of wild rice with a port wine demi glace, i felt was a big miss on the part of chef Felipe Barajas. I truly felt the rice diminished the meal and cheapened an otherwise elegant duck.

My wife enjoyed her Wild Mushroom Stuffed Chicken breast on Fresh herb risotto. While rich with the cream sauce, she loved it nonetheless.

With entrees averaging $14 and appetizers $8, Opal is one of the few wonderful dining experiences that you can return to time and again without breaking the wallet. I guess that is why they are so popular. Next time I will call days ahead for my reservation, as I advise you do too.

My favorite Brunch...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SBjX_FqTKSI/AAAAAAAAAD8/bD6y5-V7xFY/s400/SBRES9958-02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5195139649023191330" />
My favorite stop for brunch is hidden from most and disappeared for over 2 years from the Santa Barbara scene. I called for 18 months trying to find out when my "spot" would return. Ty Warner used a tiny little fire as excuse to completely overhaul my favorite restaurant. Fortunately since nobody but those "in the know" go there, it is almost always filled with just me and John Cleese and friends. You will be able to recognize me since I will be the only other person there. I prefer to sit out on the deck under the oaks and drink Champagne and order off the menu. So please come look for me, there on Sunday. But since the remodel I have not been able to make it back to my favorite spot in forever. In order to make sure the thousands of folks reading this blog don't overtake my favorite spot, I am letting it go unnamed. Leave a note if you recognize it from the photo.

Senor Savvy

"Located in a 19th-century citrus packing house, The "Savvy Spot" features a relaxing lounge with full bar service and a separate dining room with crackling fireplace and creekside views. Weather permitting, dine under the stars on the ocean view deck—a wood-burning fireplace and heated stone flooring provide year-round comfort. Chef John Trotta's regional cuisine is prepared with a palate of herbs and vegetables harvested from the on-site chef's garden. Open for dinner from 6-10 p.m. daily."

Amazing trip into the past...Only for the Savvy

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SBi09FqTKPI/AAAAAAAAADk/2lzLBkJMxFg/s400/casa_back_wide1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5195101131756480754" />
Some of the most amazing events in life come about by way of serendipity. To follow a path to a site or event by trusting your intuition and going for it. Recently some such find found its way into my life and I pass it onto you. The home of the family of George Fox Steedman in Montecito awaits those who plan ahead and make reservations to see this amazing home.

"The Casa is noted as one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It provides visitors with a glimpse into Montecito life as the Steedmans lived it in the 1930's. The estate's collection of European antique furnishing, art and many personal effects are still in place as they were when the Steedmans were in residence.

George Fox Steedman was a successful industrialist from St. Louis who developed a foundry and manufacturing business. Far from the simple "blacksmith" he adopted for the name of the estate, he was a true Renaissance Man, equally talented in the arts as well as business. After purchasing eleven acres in Montecito in 1922, he selected the area's premiere architect, George Washington Smith, to design the residence. Throughout the design period and construction, George Steedman worked in close collaboration with Smith and their joint effort produced a splendid example of an Andalusian-style country house surrounded by artfully planned grounds and gardens.

George Steedman died in 1940 and Carrie Steedman continued to live at the estate until her death in 1962. One of their daughters, Medora Steedman Bass, then lived here until her death in 1986. In 1993, the estate and its contents were transferred to the Casa del Herrero Foundation by Medora's family, fulfilling her wish that the estate be preserved. This is a very popular bouldering spot as you can see by the chalk on the rocks. Wes Dodson's review: "Although it isn't the biggest climbing spot in the world, the Brick Yard has a lot of fun problems, and gorgeous scenery. The rock at the Brick Yard is extremely skin friendly, and many of the problems feature tough slopey top-outs.
Be sure to check out "Yetti" (V4), "Smooth Criminal" (V7), and "Dancing Outlaw" (V8)."<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SA4H2VqTKGI/AAAAAAAAACs/eNuOgy_57js/s400/STP80611.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192096050513651810" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SA4L5FqTKHI/AAAAAAAAAC0/wJE32uYLHUQ/s400/STP80612.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192100495804803186" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SA4MgFqTKII/AAAAAAAAAC8/FlLZlv5pv60/s400/STP80614.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192101165819701378" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SA4M_FqTKJI/AAAAAAAAADE/rSf3MTsna_U/s400/STP80617.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192101698395646098" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SA4P7VqTKMI/AAAAAAAAADU/vRU2fXcoyEg/s400/STP80609.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5192104932506020034" />

Hiking, Bouldering, Rock Climbing....FUN!

Recently I have been asked about bouldering in and around Santa Barbara. Having been fortunate enough to have taken rappelling at UCSB and seen some of the amazing cliff walls in the valleys of Goleta, I knew a few spots. Specifically, Lizards mouth off of Camino Cielo. But a coworker and experienced in bouldering has been taking weekend trips to Camino Cielo and has promised to pass on his knowledge and photos of the area and many other great spots. To give you a taste:

http://www.santabarbarahikes.com/hikes/caminocielo/lizardsmouth.shtml

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SAzQD6IWWHI/AAAAAAAAACc/wFjHHNOJMXs/s400/lizards_mouth005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191753236013799538" />

Best directions I found online on how to find this fun little bouldering area are as follows:

Lizard's Mouth Length: 300 yards No elevation change Directions: From 101, in SB Goleta area, go on the San Marcos Pass (154) up the mountain. Turn left on West Camino Cielo and drive about 4 miles. Once you reach the Gun Club you have gone about 100 yards to far. Look for other cars, and faded spray painted writing on the road. Then look for a sandstone formation that reaches the road this is the trailhead. Once you climb over that sandstone, you will see the trail, and the there will be a sandstone slope to your right. i like my directions better than on the site, but you can use both. www.santabarbarahikes.com/caminocielo/lizardsmouth.shtml

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/SAzQSqIWWII/AAAAAAAAACk/2Lm6J_t9REo/s400/lizards_mouth.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5191753489416870018" />

Great Vacation Spot for the Rugged

I initially began this Blog as a one stop shop for all my friends and family who asked me for information on Santa Barbara. Rather than extol all my knowledge onto post it notes, I figured why not just write it all out in one place for all to read, if and when they wanted. Immediately my friend Chris who read it, commented: "You haven't added anything in quite a while, not much of a blog."

I must admit that he is correct. Again that was not my initial intent. Ideally I would keep my reading public up to speed on the best restaurants, coolest bars, sexiest bartenders, as I saw fit. But, in reality I was not going to be updating weekly. I had to come across something pretty good to feel worthy of passing along.

So after many months of quiet, I recently read in this month's "Sunset" magazine an article about "Safari Tents". This trend is to give you a camping experience, yet allow you to sleep in a bed. Quite a novel idea, that evidently has been going on for some time in Africa for the upper class set who don't want to have a dirt floor when they camp. This idea while not necessarily novel, was novel to me to find out that it is available just 20 minutes north of Santa Barbara at El Capitan State Beach park.

Now you are probably saying to yourself that if it is written in this wonderful Blog that everyone now knows and it will be impossible to get a reservation. Well, fear not.

http://www.elcapitancanyon.com/tents.html#

This link will take you to the site where there are 26 safari tents available. If you go on a weekend be sure to take in the Jazz/ Blues every Saturday night between May and October. Stay on the pier and visit a tasting room or go down the street and drink Santa Barbara Winery's Pinot Grigio in their warehouse winery located just off Cabrillo Boulevard. Most folks will hop in the car and take the 45 minute drive north to Santa Ynez and visit the winery's directly. One of the most often asked questions I get is which winery's to visit. So here are my suggestions. Head over the 154 to the 246 towards Solvang. Turn left onto Refugio road. Go about 1-2 miles to the Santa Ynez River to Sunstone Vineyards & Winery: http;//www.sunstonewinery.com .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/R1hAop-za0I/AAAAAAAAABc/kzjSQRWPh_8/s400/contact_page_pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5140930041851636546" />

This winery is a spectacular place to begin your tour of the wine country and this is a truly beautiful location. The wines are all organic and the Rice family is a delight. You can typically meet them in the tasting room. Once you have purchased several cases reverse course back down Refugio road to 246, turn left to Alamo Pintado road. Right on Alamo Pintado about 1/2 mile to Buttonwood Farm. This is just a simple tasting room, but the wines and hospitality are wonderful. Once done here, continue down Alamo Pintado to Grand Ave in Los Olivos. This is the heart of tasting rooms. Many, many wineries here. But first stop and have some lunch. There is a deli and several cafes. If you are savvy, buy a sandwich at the deli and hop over to Longoria Wines and buy a bottle of their lovely Chardonnay and enjoy in their picnic area. If you are lucky Rick's wife Diana may join you.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/R1hA8p-za1I/AAAAAAAAABk/BPUX-LcMXwM/s400/diana_rick.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5140930385449020242" />

Head out of Los Olivos to the 154 to Foxen Canyon Road: Follow the signs to Firestone, Fess Parker, and Zaca Mesa. A must stop is at Foxen Vineyard which is a wooden Barnlike shack on the side of the road. A truly great stop. Pinot's are fantastic and the comraderie around the glass is fantastic. At this point turn around and head back to Highway 154 and either return home or if you were savvy and made some appointments you could head on to Lompoc's Ghetto and meet the winemakers as they make their wine. Kathy of Fiddlehead will welcome you and they have a full tasting room: www.fiddleheadcellars.com from there you can explore and with a little luck and perserverence you will find your own lovely spots to write me about. Enjoy.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_SyEMI3tWa_I/R1hBHp-za2I/AAAAAAAAABs/TaIR_koDsp0/s400/fiddleflash.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5140930574427581282" />

Stop and smell the Roses

Life is too short not to relax and experience your bliss once and a while. When was the last time you packed your picnic basket with some great food and wine and went someplace amazing. If you are savvy as I am you will know that you don't need to go far. Grab your beach chair and head out to my favorite park: Alice Keck Memorial Gardens and let your kids run wild while you find your soul again. Relax by the pond and enjoy the turtles. Cross over the street and enjoy Alameda park playground when the kids get restless. Remember, live life to the fullest.

Watch the Sun Set

You have your Mojito but you don't know where to drink it to watch the sun set. Try a secret spot on top of the Andalucia hotel. You won't find too many who aren't in the know since this is THE spot to be when the sun goes down, and yet it will be quiet and calm. The best way I know of getting a last minute room is a little known secret: www.hotspotsusa.com . With one call you can find any room in the city within your price range and avoid calling around to every place you can think of offhand. There is no extra cost for you since this company gets a commission from the hotel directly. A very convenient way to do it.

If you have a huge amount of money to throw at this particular problem and flowers just won't cut it with the wife, do what I do and call up the best hotels and see if they have any late minute cancellations that you can take for a discount. Call the best B&B in north america:

http://www.simpsonhouseinn.com/ (photo top left)

Or check out this link to see a list of all hotels in Santa Barbara that will get you out of the dog house.
http://www.fivestaralliance.com/luxury_hotels/
north_america__united_states_-_west__
santa_barbara,_ca/index.html

An Amazing Weekend

Everyone should have the opportunity at some point in life to sit overlooking the Pacific Ocean with a glass of wine in hand and enjoy their friends and family. If you don't have the time right now, then stare at this view and take it in. This lovely house was featured in Coastal Living magazine and made such an impression on me that I went and booked a 3 night visit. The architect who re-designed this home is a genius and every room is amazing. The home is small but perfect for me and my guests so decide for yourself before booking. Grill some great fish on the side patio and pour a Pinot and toast to me for my great recommendation. Realize, I am sharing my best tips for your benefit. Why? I share only the best. To sit at the bar, have a margarita and enjoy a chat with the locals. I was saddened to learn that my old friend had gone in for some plastic surgery. While the face lift removed the wrinkles and cracks, Joe was no longer the friend I remembered. Completely depressing to find that at my mid life I am opposed to such change.

It appears that Joe's is going to compete with the rest of State Street to attract the tourists wandering up the road. The tourists who want a clean, freshly painted, stark environment to sit and have a quick meal. Whereas, us locals, no longer have our beloved site to sit and enjoy seeing old friends without enduring paint fumes and lack of nostalgic paintings, photos, and animal heads. I never thought I'd care so much for a buffalo head, but there you have it.

Rumor is the new owner who made all these changes is going to either sell the wall coverings or give them to a museum of sorts. Who knew, all these years we were drinking in a verifiable museum. Ahh, how I long for the old days. Thank goodness the bartenders have not left and the drinks are still stiff. At least helps numb the dramatic change. Along with the new jukebox and cute hostesses. You will have to go on up to Harry's to say hello to me and lament the good old days.

To Love a City

Santa Barbara is a place you cannot just visit once and forget. It is a place to take in slowly and over time fall in love. I have often been asked why I love Santa Barbara so much.
